Good thing I saw this on Amazon and immediately ordered it after seeing the reviews. It  got rid of the stench, and I’ve been using it ever since.”

Criticism

“Got this from Amazon. I used this on my two pooches; unfortunately, one of them had an adverse reaction to this product, noticeable red bumps appeared days after using this. Odd as it only affected one of them, it probably depends if your mutt has allergies?”

Criticism

“I don’t recommend this product, as it leaves a soapy residue on your pooch that feels like the dog hasn’t been properly washed even if I rinsed him multiple times. The fragrance is very subtle, and if you like your pooches smelling very good after washing, this isn’t the one for you.”

5. Veterinary Formula Solutions Puppy Love Shampoo

Made to be extra gentle, Veterinary Formula Solutions is formulated to be non-irritating on the eyes and thoroughly cleans without drying the outer layers of your pooch. Vet-recommended for pups over six weeks of age; it leaves your puppy smelling like baby powder, providing a subtle scent that is not overpowering. Commendation

“Nice smell that lasts a long time; it is not overbearing. The liquid’s composition is thin but lathers very well and rinses easily.

My pooch’s coat is thick, and I wash my dog as often as once a week, and if you do it’s important to not only have a product that cleans well but also rinses easily, this product fits the bill.”

Criticism

“My pup had a strong reaction to this product, and I had to take him to the vet, and as it turns out, he has an allergic reaction to it. It was unfortunate and had that not happened.

My vet said she would not recommend it for pups. So, I guess my assessment is mixed but honest.”

6. Isle of Dogs Tearless Sulfate Free Shampoo

Made to keep pups spruce and clean; this product is tender to the eyes and does not irritate it when it comes in contact during bathing. Their fragrance is one of the best! It lingers for a while, and you don’t get that usual wet dog odor after a couple of hours of bathing.

It left my pooch clear from mats and tangles as well, and I no longer see my pooch scratching incessantly. I think I’m going to order more of this, consider me satisfied.”

Criticism

“I can’t find any natural stuff on the label. For me, the smell is too strong, it is a tad bit overwhelming.

Some may love it, but for an animal whose main sensory mode is the smell, this is a bad choice for them.

In my opinion, the last thing you want is having your pooch wear perfume when it can be too overwhelming for them.”

7. Vet’s Best Hot Spot Itch Relief Shampoo for Dogs

An easy-fix for dogs who vigorously scratch and have dermal irritation, despite not being made strictly for pups, made it to our top list because of its fast-acting relief for itchiness. I tried lots of products but nothing helped, but this one helps! It works as described in the label.”

Criticism

“I bought this product from Amazon, thinking that it would stop my pooch from scratching; however, it seemed to intensify the itch and made him scratch even more.

The scent is too strong, and I had a tough time breathing while bathing my dog. This product doesn’t work for my dog or me.”

Criticism

“This is over scented, very overwhelming. I think that it caused more itching for my pooch. Hopefully, it hasn’t affected anyone else’s dog.”

9. BioSilk for Dogs Silk Therapy Puppy Tearless Shampoo

Made for all doggies but is safe to be used on pups who are at least eight weeks old, this product cleans, conditions, and softens, leaving your pooch’s skin and coat silky soft and shiny. Key Traits

  • No Harsh Chemicals
  • Does not irritate the eyes during bathing
  • Contains Cornflower Oil and aloe
  • Lathers significantly even at small amounts

Commendation

“I love this product because it comes in a large 24oz bottle and is very concentrated. Lathers very well but rinses very easily, it has a very subtle scent which is best for puppies, and since the bottle is huge I can share it with my older pooches. The price is very worth it.”

Criticism

“I adopted an abandoned pup and needed to get a gentle cleanser. I bought this product and used it, but it caused my pup to scratch uncontrollably, I had to put my pup under a low dose of Benadryl and take her to the vet after.”

Criticism

“Would not recommend this product unless you know that your pooch is not allergic to the hydrolyzed protein from oatmeal. I learned this the hard way.”

12. Oster Oatmeal Essentials Shampoo

Since oatmeal is the primary ingredient, this pet shampoo made by Oster is excellent for protecting and soothing the sensitive skin of your pup. It can also be used on older pooches prone to some kinds of dermatitis as they can significantly benefit from the natural components of this product. Criticism

“My pooch’s hair came out in clumps during and after bathing, I’ve never seen a dog shed so much fur. That’s problematic as my pooch only has short hair and might lose its protection in its entirety.”

Criticism

“Just like others who commented, the bottle was improperly sealed, and it spilled all over the box, what a waste! Probably Amazon’s fault but it could also be the way the bottle is packaged.”

This product is an effective but gentle flea shampoo, attributed to its perfect mixture of insecticide components, and conditioning properties. Criticism

“As compared to my previous purchases, it feels like this product is now thinner. That being said, it works fine, but I miss the old mixture where it was concentrated and kills more fleas.”

A Pet Owner’s Guide: Choosing the Best Shampoo for your Puppy

Undertaking the quest for finding the right product for your pup can be very daunting, especially for novice pet owners who might not have enough experience to make the right choice. Essential factors such as the physiological differences between a young and adult dog might be overlooked when making your first purchase. Thankfully, you don’t need to feel overwhelmed anymore as we’ve listed some of the critical points that all pet owners should think over before choosing their very own best puppy shampoo.

Artificial Ingredients

This is a big no-no for both puppies and adult dogs; artificial ingredients are harsh chemicals that are scientifically proven to bring a certain amount of harm to your pet. Adverse effects might not immediately show; however, continued use of hair products with unnatural additives could potentially damage your pooch’s skin and fur. Artificial additives such as phthalates, formaldehyde, and parabens are just some examples you need to be aware of. Always check the label.

Natural Fragrance

Same with artificial ingredients, it is best to opt for natural fragrances such as lavender, chamomile, and eucalyptus. Most paw parents prefer purchasing scented cleansers to keep their pups smelling fresh and clean. Since mutts have a keen sense of smell, it is wise to choose natural fragrances versus overpowering artificial ones.

pH Balance

It is essential to know the pH balance of the product you are purchasing, and puppies have far more sensitive skin than humans or older canines. You need to determine if the product is specifically tweaked to the right pH level, which would not damage or irritate your pet’s skin and hair. Using a shampoo that does not match the pH level our dogs need could break down the protective layer in their mantle, which leaves them vulnerable to diseases and parasites.

Inclusion of Skin Protection

Natural oils that secrete from our pup’s body help protect the skin and hair of our pooches, unfortunately washing and bathing too often could remove these essential elements. To help the skin naturally regain these protective oils, we recommended to use a shampoo that includes milled oat grain, aloe vera, and sometimes vitamin E. Doing so would help keep the hair and skin healthy and free from bacteria.

Health Conditions

There are times when our fur babies experience skin conditions such as flea infections, allergies, or skin hypersensitivity, which would need exclusive care products or medical treatments. It is best to check with your local vet to help you determine what to do. They might recommend specific instructions on which ingredients to avoid or provide shampoo options that would best fit the current situation.

Breeds and Lineage

When adopting a pup, it is imperative to know the breed and the lineage, and this helps determine if the pup’s breed is more prone to skin irritation or if it might need additional care. Different breeds have different needs; some are more sensitive than others or might have skin folds that need extra-care. Lineage helps identify if the pup’s parents had any allergies the pup could inherit; this could help you avoid certain products.

A Helpful Review: Is Puppy Shampoo a Necessity?

A lot of first-time paw parents usually ask if there is an actual need to purchase puppy-specific products. Some might think that it’s just a marketing ploy by companies to get you to buy different variants of their products when you only need one; I say take a breather and listen to reason first before you make a hasty judgment.

The Short Answer: Yes

Why? Puppies are still infants; they do not have the same physical characteristics as adult pups as they are still growing and developing; their skin and fur are more sensitive and require extra-gentle care. Washing your puppy with products that are not specially formulated for them could cause more harm than good; imagine bathing yourself using car soap – it’s just not going to work.

On Using Adult Dog Shampoo on Pups

Normally I wouldn’t recommend doing this as puppies tend to be more sensitive and usually require shampoos that are gentler on the skin and fur. However, there are some paw parents that use adult dog shampoos on their pups, provided that it is formulated to be gentler or made for pets that have extra sensitive skin, always read the label to check if it’s safe to be used on pooches 6 weeks or older. Like all dog owners, we want to save money, and I agree;  if you have a product that can be safely used on both adult and young canines, then why not?

Can I Use Human Shampoos On My Pup?

Never! There is absolutely no circumstance should you resort to using human hair products on your puppy. Human hair products are made to match our skin and scalp’s acidic pH level, whereas a dog’s outer layer is alkaline- it’s never a good idea to use on dogs, especially on pups. Continued use of human products on pups could cause severe dermal irritation, dandruff, and dryness.

Can You Use Baby Shampoos on a Young Canine?

The answer is yes and no; this is probably the safest alternative to human hair products. They are designed for sensitive skin and are made to be very gentle, and yes, you can use it as a safe alternative, unlike adult variants. Using it regularly is not recommended as it is not specially designed for pups.

We mentioned above that it is, in fact, safe to be used as an alternative; however, it should only be used as a back-up, emergency sort of option. Situations wherein you accidentally spilled your remaining dog shampoo on the floor, and your pup is already in the tub. If you do end up using it, make sure to rinse thoroughly.

Introducing Your Puppy to Bathing

Puppies are gifts, and you should always be thankful for having one, as we discussed before it is a big responsibility to be a paw parent as you are the one who will shape your pup into a well-mannered dog. You must bathe your puppies correctly the first time you do it because they might associate it with punishment and may come to hate bathing throughout their lifetime. An accidental splash of shampoo into the eyes could traumatize your pup for life!

As paw parents, it is your role and responsibility to train your pup on how to enjoy bath time. We’ve listed some tips to help you fulfill this role.

  • Veterinarians recommend bathing pups starting when they’re 12 weeks old. It was observed that the mommy dog regularly licks their pups clean up until this age (on average). That is where we, as paw parents, pick up the responsibility of maintaining our puppy’s hygiene.
  • Some dog breeds love bathing, and you might be worrying that your pup doesn’t; don’t think about it too much as they can be trained early to enjoy bathing. Just make sure to make them feel that you’re playing around when bathing and never use it as punishment.
  • In general, dogs have tremendous amounts of energy, and that’s the main reason they’re oh so active. Veteran dog owners recommend playing or exercising your pup before bathing to “tire them out,” this makes the pup more compliant during bathing; not only that, but it conditions your pup’s mind that after an active play session, there would be a rewarding bath after.
  • Preparing all the equipment needed beforehand ensures that you don’t waste time going back and forth to different rooms to retrieve stuff that you need. It gives you more time to focus and bond with your pup while bathing.
  • When bathing your pup always remember to keep off the eyes, nose, and ears even when using mild shampoo. These are very sensitive, and washing with shampoos could cause your pup to run amok and cause your pup to hate bathing. You can just use a wet cloth to clean these parts.
  • Make sure to check the water temperature that you use in bathing your pups; we recommend keeping it warm as this helps your pup calm down during bathing. Warm water also relaxes the muscles, which will help in removing dirt stuck between the hair follicles.
  • When shampooing your pup, make sure to massage it deeply onto the outer layers. You want to clean both the skin and fur and make sure that it is both free from dirt. Deeply massaging the shampoo helps relax the muscles and promote blood circulation, this makes your pup enjoy bathing too!
  • Always remember to start from top to bottom from head to tail. Always keep your pups engaged during bathing, call them by their dog names.
  • Rinse thoroughly; you don’t want any leftover suds to be licked by your pup. More so, leaving soap suds on the fur could potentially damage it.
  • Completely dry your pup using a towel; if your pup is trying to shake off excess water, just let him do it. Let him groom himself after being dried, and we don’t recommend using hair blowers as these are too noisy and could cause your pup to panic.
  • If you have a grooming brush, now is the best time to use it! It helps straighten the fur and remove excess hair.
  • You can also give your pup his favorite meal or treat afterward; this is also part of teaching him how to enjoy a bath if he behaves he gets a treat. Don’t forget to collect your equipment and store them properly to avoid mishandling it.

Puppy Bathing Frequency

As much as we’d love to wash our pups as often as possible to keep them smelling clean and fresh, it’s just not the best way to go. As we talked about earlier, the outer layers of dogs secrete natural oils that help maintain overall health and hygiene. Washing too often could wash these away and encourage disease-carrying parasites to infest your pet, much like opening the gate to invaders.

Now that we’ve established that you shouldn’t wash your pup too often, we must determine when is the best time to clean our pups. Unfortunately, there isn’t a magic number that we can provide you, however, to help you establish the best time for washing your fur baby, here are some guidelines.

  • Dirt / Smell Level

Many dog owners usually go by dirt level or smell level; however, this can be subjective to each one’s tolerance level to smell and dirt. For example, you might tolerate your pup’s natural odor longer than your friends; however, if they smell it, it could be interpreted as being an irresponsible paw parent. The same as the level of dirtiness (especially with pups with light-colored fur), slight dirt on the hair might not irk you the same way it annoys others.

If this is the case, then it’s best to set a regular schedule to wash your pup, rather than wait for it to smell or look dirty.

  • Hair Length

Dogs have different lengths of hair follicles,  and this is the same with puppies too. Waiting for long intervals before bathing could cause the hair to mat and entangle, so if your puppy’s breed is known to grow long hair, it is best to wash them more frequently than others to avoid this from happening. Brushing your pup after bathing also helps remove excess fur and keeps it untangled.

  • Natural oils

Natural oils that keep the fur lustrous and soft are washed away during bathing. Frequent bathing will not provide enough time for these oils to regenerate naturally, and if they are not recovered in time, your pup’s outer layer could become dry. Take this into consideration before deciding on how often you should bathe your pup.

Conclusion

To help you accomplish this task, you need to identify what your puppy needs then get the most suitable puppy shampoo for him, another word of advice: just be patient and make sure to feel your pup loved.

You do not want to use regular dogs or human shampoo on your pup as they are more sensitive, regularly bathing also helps maintain the optimal condition of their fur and skin. Always remember that proper hygiene is the primary foundation of a healthy puppy. I hope that after discussing these details, you now know why puppy shampoos are a necessity and not a luxury item.
