Our Top 45 Aquarium Lights: Reviews for the Best LED Aquarium Lighting Good for Tanks with Fish, Plants, and Reefs

All aquarium LED lightings in this list have their notable features that may greatest suit your needs. We listed some of their pros and cons to differentiate better, which model is the right one for you.

1. NICREW ClassicLED Plus

This LED aquarium fixture is 25 percent brighter and has more versatility than its predecessor. It is great for fishes and plants that require a low to medium-light level. This model includes a wide range of sizes to fit most fish tank sizes; you can choose from 12″ to 54″.

With its bright white lights that can give off 6,500K temperature, combined with blue, red, and green, you will notice a more brilliant and vivid color. The NICREW ClassicLED Plus is suitable for freshwater or saltwater aquascapes.

This item series features an aluminum alloy housing that is light and more durable. It also optimizes heat dissipation for a longer lifetime, with adjustable mounting brackets for flexibility in fitting the length of both your frameless and framed aquariums.

The lighting time is 8 to 10 hrs only, and we recommend that you place this unit over a glass cover. You can purchase an optional controller if you want a dimming feature. It’s a great LED aquarium illumination for at least half of the larger brands’ cost without sacrificing quality.

PROS

  • Available in a wide range of sizes
  • Full-spectrum lights in 5 colors
  • Durable with adjustable mounting brackets

CONS

  • No dimmer, need to purchase an optional controller
  • Users reported that it’s too bright and caused algae growth

SPECIFICATION

  • Dimension – 14.01” x 4.6” x 2.48”
  • Item Weight – 1.25lbs
  • Other available sizes – 18”, 30”, 36”, and 48”

2. NICREW ClassicLED

This product is an affordable middle-ranged lighting system that is great for growing plant life. A rocker switch with three options can adjust the white and blue light setting, off, day, or moonlight effect. It has an adjustable bracket that can fit almost any aquarium dimension. Its “U-shaped” feet is a 0.5inches wide plastic that drops down above the aquarium. This U-channel stabilizes the fixture and prevents it from being accidentally knocked into the water.

It’s very energy-efficient, operating as low as 6W. You can grow low-light plants like anubias nana, anubias congensis, or staurogyne repens. A timer controller with dimmer can be bought as optional so that you can customize it based on your fish tank setting. The shorter sizes are made with plastic, while the longer ones, the 36″ and 48″ aquarium LED lights, are made with aluminum.

Suitable to be used over glass covers or glass canopy prevents moisture from reaching and damaging the unit. This product is not water-proof, avoid them getting wet at all costs.

PROS

  • Adjustable brackets
  • Simple to use, no programming needed
  • Economical price and energy efficient

CONS

  • No automatic timer and dimmer integrated
  • Cannot be hung over the aquarium
  • Not that durable, power adapter and jack are not hard-wired

SPECIFICATION

  • Dimension – 11” x 4” x 1.4”
  • Item Weight – 0.8lbs
  • Other available sizes – 18”, 30”, 36”, and 48”

3. Hygger Light Clip

This clip-on unit has two lighting modes, white and blue for day use, while blue LEDs are for night use. The 13 W unit is enough for a fish tank of 3.5 to 9 gallons, while the 21 W unit can illuminate 10 to 20 gallons. The Hygger clip-on is designed for freshwater or saltwater lighting and can last up to 20,000 hrs.

It’s very easy to install, with two strong plastic screws to mount it firmly to a 0 to 0.98 inches thick glass wall. It has a flexible gooseneck clamp that can be easily bent to any angle and position. The crystal case is water-proof, which protects the unit from being damaged by moisture. Still, it is not meant to be submerged in water.

Both units are very lightweight, and we like the sleek design too. The cables included in the package are long enough, about 4 ft plus another 4ft for adapter cable with a power input of 100-240 V AC and 50/60 Hz. It also provides sterilization and kills bacteria that can harm your plants and aquatic pets. The recommended usage is 8 to 10 hours.

PROS

  • Great lighting and brightness level
  • Easy to use and set-up
  • Can be clipped on either rimless or black rims

CONS

  • Delicate lamp head, we recommend adjusting it using the neck
  • Not for advanced plants that can only survive 6,500K

SPECIFICATION

  • Dimension – 9.7” x 2.5” x 6.3”
  • Item Weight – 0.7lbs (13W)
  • Other available sizes – 14.5” (21W)

4. Koval Inc. Hood Light

This product is also one of the top-rated models due to its high efficiency but low energy cost. It’s energy-efficient and ideal for anyone on a budget and wants to save on energy costs. It has three variations based on the number of lights it has, the 78, 129, and 156 models. Under this series, you can use the lightings for up to 50,000 hours with a full-color spectrum in 5 different colors. It has three control modes, all on/off, or blue LEDs only, giving off a nighttime effect.

The sleek and slim-line design gives it a modern feel, and the casing is made from an aluminum alloy shell for long-lasting use. The adapter’s new design has a dual prong connection with a rubber sleeve that protects from accidental water splashes that might damage the unit or create a fire hazard. Unlike others, when one of the lights is broken, the rest are unaffected and can still work normally.

PROS

  • Very energy efficient and low energy cost
  • It produces excellent lighting, slim-line design

CONS

5. Current USA Orbit Marine

This product series from the Current USA is the first to incorporate dual blue actinic-style and dual daylight chips into one fixture. The combination of 8,000k and 12,000k white, along with 445nm and 460nm actinic blue, you can see healthier aquatic life development with correct settings. It has a number of modes enough to create effects like storm or cloud cover, which can be configured by a wireless infrared controller.

You could use the IR controller if you purchased an eFlux wave pump, making a slightly realistic pulsating wave. You can also set a 24-hour light schedule for more personal customization. The unit comes with two adjustable docking or mounting legs to fit various aquarium dimensions from 18″ up to 60″. However, you can buy an optional adjustable mount arm bracket for more flexibility.

We like that it meets the IP65 standards, plus it has an excellent guide manual, unlike cheaper lightings. It gives more information on how you can customize the lights and everything you can do with the unit. It’s an ideal unit for a saltwater aquarium with live corals and other aquatic life.

6. Current USA Orbit Marine Pro

Like the normal version, this series is specifically designed for coral reef tanks. It is incorporated with a wider spectrum of higher-powered SMD LED lighting chips that incorporate the red, green, and blue in one encapsulation. This unit can sustain the right photosynthetic active radiation, light spectrum, and necessary wavelengths for strong growth and brilliant color.

The LED lighting combines royal blue(445nm), deep blue(453nm), ultraviolet(415nm), cool white(8,000k), warm white(6,500k), and indigo magenta(purple/red) LEDs. These diodes can be programmed to set various effects, including cloud cover, fading lunar, and storm lighting. You can save custom time schedules and coral acclimation into four memory locations, so you don’t always set it all the time.

It has an aluminum alloy construction and adjustable preloaded docking legs that allows a perfect fit for tanks 18″ to 72″. Like all other Current USA products, it has an IP65 standard, ensuring it’s water-resistant. The package also includes a Ramp Timer Pro controller, IR remote with mount, and a 24VDC UL approved transformer. It is compatible with the optional arm bracket from the same brand, which is a great buy if you’re installing it on a nano-tank.

PROS

  • Has intensity control for white and blue channels independently
  • Four memory locations for custom 24-hour timer schedules
  • Aluminum alloy construction, IP65-rated

CONS

  • Loop System incompatibility

It has 6500k white and 445nm blue lights creating different modes creating real-world aquatic conditions. It also runs on low energy ranging from 7.5Watts to 18Watts depending on the satellite series model. Ideal for freshwater aquarium for an affordable price.

This product line has the same key features of the Satellite Plus but has been upgraded with more control options. It also has a new color spectrum featuring spherical 90° optical lenses and increased power. It’s fully programmable with a 24-hour timer function; you can set the intensity, sunrise, sunset, and weather effects.

The wireless controller has two memory locations for custom color spectrums and four-color presets. As the name says, this comes with a built-in timer that lets you program and adjusts the intensity for different channels. The V165 and T300 uses 2 channels for their fixture; blue channel: violet(420nm), royal blue(450nm), blue(470nm) and white channel: green(520nm), red(660nm), neutral white(6,500k), cool white(12,000k). Both lightings have advanced high-speed fans, and aluminum heat sinks for heat dissipation.

The timer doesn’t work as a ramp timer, and you cannot set different intensities throughout the day. It also doesn’t have shimmer or weather effects. It can automatically turn the light on and off and set different intensities for two channels individually by either using the remote or the two different control knobs. The hanging kits are adjustable with a max length of 23″ by pulling the loose rope end and spring button. At the height of 12″, you can achieve the max coverage of 30 “x24” for V165, while for T300, it should be 40 “x24” of the same height.

Guide: Important Factors to Consider when buying an LED Aquarium Lighting Best for Tanks with Fish, Plants, and Reefs

With the wide range selections available, it’s always challenging at first. We listed some of the factors to help you filter and select the best LED aquarium illumination for you.

  • Types of Aquarium

It’s always best to know first what type of aquarium you have to narrow down what you need.

Planted Aquarium contains more plants than fish and still requires care and maintenance. Besides an aquatic planted substrate, you need LED lightings that can provide and mimic photosynthesis and sunlight. If you have tall aquascapes, you need higher intensity lighting to penetrate deep waters.

Freshwater Aquarium – contains any aquatic creatures that come from creeks and rivers that can either be cold or warm variety. Coldwater creatures like goldfish don’t require heat, avoid using lightings that may affect temperature.

Saltwater Aquarium – contains aquatic inhabitants from seas and oceans. It includes invertebrates that have similar requirements with plants. The difference is that the symbiotic algae carry out the process rather than the coral polyp itself. It requires higher intensity lighting than an aquatic plant, especially hard corals.

  • Features

For a freshwater aquarium, it doesn’t need sophisticated dimming or color customization. But if you’re maintaining a reef or raising live aquatic plant life, you’ll probably need more like the proper light color, intensity, and a timer control or timer ready feature. The ideal is 6,500K minimum aquarium LED illumination for stimulating photosynthesis.

  • Budget

The budget is also important since we don’t want to waste money on useless lights that don’t meet our needs. While the initial cost for the best LED aquarium lighting is what you first look at, you can also check the power consumption, which may help you save money for operation costs.
